Globalization and Social Movements

by Natsuki Oshiro

I’ll write about Globalization & Social movements, especially pose the theme about the democratization movement in 2011:“Arab Spring” .

“Arab Spring” stemmed from anti-government movement in Tunisia of North Africa. And it was spread over countries in Middle East and North Africa. In these countries like Tunisia and Egypt, presidents who did authoritarian governments for a long time were retreated. In Libya, a change of government was occurred through armed conflict against people who are antiestablishment.

Like above, “Arab Spring” became as big political change as ever. The characteristic of this political change is that the people, who could not almost participate in politics until then, became impelling force of the movement and the change. And on the back of that, dissatisfaction by people to economic inequality and control by the despotic political power rose more and more.

The people who participated in anti-government movement shared information through social networking service (SNS) like Facebook or Twitter. And the democratization movement had spread beyond borders faster than ever before through the internet. I think that if it were not for spread of internet with globalization, this rapid spread of movement would not happen.

After a series of “Arab Spring”, global society has supported the democratization movement in each country. To the violent suppression by the government authorities, armed sanction based on UN Security Council Resolutions was done like the case in Libya.

Now, in many countries where democratization movement happened, political process to democratization is developing. However, a lot of problems are accumulating in the respect of economic gap and employment. We have to pay attention to abilities of Islamic political parties that come into power in Tunisia and Egypt.  And from now on, some people have apprehensive that the society becomes unstable if dissatisfaction to new system rises.

After “Arab Spring”, Chinese authority worried that this democratization movement had spread in China too. And they regulate information on internet or any other information mediums that have to do with this democratization movement. Actually this stream extended to China, and some people attempted to bring about a democratization movement in China. However, China authority suppressed those people. This rapid spread of social movements is threat for authorities of some countries like China that are not democratic country.

Social movements may be regarded as domestic issue. But now, social movement also have influenced strongly by globalization, and it spreads all over the world rapidly now.

Accept Other Cultures or Close a Country?

by Chika Oki

As the world is becoming more and more globalized, almost all cultures in the world are now shared. Like “california roll,” there are many cases that one culture is changed into a completely different one from the original. Some worry this situation saying that originality of culture of each country is disappearing. On the contrary, accepting other cultures makes one country’s culture more diverse and sophisticated and enriches people’s life.

Japanese animation is a good example which shows good effect of spreading culture. Now, a lot of Japanese animations are broadcasted around the world because they are popular for its creativity and beauty of pictures. Also, some movies are based on Japanese animations or novels. One example is a Japanese traditional animation, “Astro Boy,” which was made more than sixty years ago by Osamu Tezuka, Japanese cartoonist. It is called “Tetsuwan Atomu” in Japan, and it became popular in the United States since 2000’s. This animation describes the human dream of making a real, kind robot, which lives with people and keeps the world’s peace. This animation also inspired scientists’ desire of making a human-like robot, and they have succeeded to make robots which speak, run, and think themselves like human beings and completely look like a human. Another example is Japanese favorite movies made by Hayao Miyazaki. In his movies, he describes human’s natural foolishness and wonderfulness straightly with beautiful pictures and gives us some important messages. His movies are now translated into many languages and enjoyed all over the world. His movie definitely stimulated activated the world’s animation industry. Thus, knowing other cultures leads the domestic industry to progress and diversifies people’s thought or creation. Moreover, Japanese animation are now progressing and keeping foreign people amazed, so spread of cultures doesn’t mean that one culture loses its originality.

Then, what if a country keeps other country’s culture from coming in? From 1639 to 1854, Japan was closing its country, and keeping foreign cultures away. All trade had been prohibited except trade with China and Holland. Japan had no way to know what was going in the world, and consequently Japan became an isolated nation. Soon after Japan opened its country, Japan was treated unequal by other powers because Japan didn’t know how Europeans and Americans think. This shows that ignoring other cultures means ignoring other thoughts or sense of values. Keeping other cultures away narrow your thoughts and sometimes hides the bad point in a country which should be improved. Therefore, all countries should accept and share other cultures positively.

Globalization and Inequality

by Naoko Ohshima

Nowadays the world reaches the globalization era by progress in telecommunications technology and borderless of the economy.  Internationally the movement of people, fortune, service, capital, information and technology has a global effect on not only economic field but also politics, society, culture and environment, and so on.  Then who enjoy the blessings accompanied by progress of such globalization?  In other words, does everyone enjoy equality profit brought about by globalization?  Only a part of the rich or the developed countries are got it?  Today there are many argument about income distribution of the world accompanied by such globalization, namely, the world will or not become inequality with progress of globalization.

Under present conditions, credit shrunk by global financial panic.  And a food shortage  bring about a very large impact.  According to IMF, some hundred million people are exposed to crisis of hunger all over the world.  A billion laborers live less than one dollar per day.  Of course there are other problems like global warming, climate change and so on.  I will state about inequality focus on economic as follows.

The economic globalization speeds up an inequality of income globally.  According to investigation of the UN, now 1% class of the richest in the world occupy 40% individual assets of the world.  The income of wealth class is increasing on the one hand and poverty is advancing on the other, distribution become steady inequality.  The labor world change dramatically and rapidly accompanied by rapid globalization.  Generally, globalization made a switchover the balance of a power or an effect from laborer to capital.  The capital may cause move employment or industrial foothold from the one region to the other.  A ratio of wages hold national income is decreasing in regardless of developed or developing country on the one side, the profit of enterprise is increasing.  At the same time the situation of laborer is more and more severe.  Instability of labor reaches very dangerous level.

In conclusion, the progress of globalization means that a laborer and laborer union must improve international activity too.  All laborer union should is cope with only domestic for capital before. However it is the past story, now we are in the era which needs international strategy.  Not only form of decision in international meeting, but also we must include an international strategy in daily activity of laborer union.  We must fuse domestic and international activity of laborer union.  Globalization is that kind of thing, enterprise did those things for some years and laborer union also should put it in practice.

The Possibilities of Sustainable Development

by Naoya Suizu

The earth is dying by human action.  Since the Industrial Revolution happened in Britain in the eighteenth century, human beings invited many new technologies and raised the standard of living by industrialization.  But, the development was hardly considered about environment then. As a result, human beings caused various environmental problems such as global warming, desertification and so on.  Gradually, many people begin to notice the big problems and try to improve them by the various means now.  The means are very different by every nation because it has every political, economic, religious and environmental background, particularly between developing countries and developed countries.  At the same time, people begin to cooperate about many environmental problems because they are not the problems of a nation.  To our regret, they aren’t solved now.  So, we should seek the road of the solution in every nation and need the unity around the world based on the improvement of the environmental problems still more.

When we think how to protect environment, we can’t help thinking the process of the economic development.  For all nations, it is very important and developing countries don’t want to be prevented from it by the environmental protection particularly.  But, developing countries face to the problems more than developed countries ironically and they have to treat the problems for their own country.  So, developing countries which have the limited money, resources and techniques don’t obey the process of development like developed countries but need to create new possibilities for development because they will also destroy environment same as developed countries did.  For example, Rwanda promotes Eco-tours.  It is the plan that we can see some gorillas in front of us in Rwanda’s National Parks.  It benefits the local community around Rwanda’s National Parks directly and the benefit is used for conservation. So, it has economic effects while it urges the environmental protection.  It is called Eco tourism and it is thought as a part of important industries. Like this, developing countries have the possibilities and we should think the proper means of economic development and environmental protection for every developing country.

In addition, the international conferences are very important as the place where every nation shows their idea.  The other day, the Rio+20 environmental summit was held in Rio de janeiro and representatives of every nation discussed environmental problems mainly.  But, the summit couldn’t get the good result because of the gap of the opinion between developing countries and developed countries. Exactly, it is the fact that this summit wasn’t enough, but it had changes, in particular, the aim for the sustainable development.  From now on, every nation has to discuss compromise point in the international conference to start action for the environmental protection earlier all over the world.

In fact, it is not easy to cooperate with each other for environment in the world because the economic development has priority for most nations.  But, every nation needs the discussion for the new possibilities of economic development the same as it protects environment now. I think we should solve many environmental problems together around the world by using proper means for every nation to continue to protect the beautiful earth in the future.

Cultural Globalization and Gender

by Sayaka Kuroiwa

I read the article “Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ally McBeal and Arranged Marriages: Globalization on the Ground in India” ( 2003 by Steve Derné). Derné says that “cultural globalization has failed to transform their ideas about family life. Instead, cultural globalization has simply introduced new images that men use to reinforce old days” (p. 18). According to the article, thanks to cultural globalization, in india, many foreign cinemas have been seen by many Indians. These cinemas sometimes reflect independent, strong and free women in developed country. Generally speaking, these foreign cultures on cinemas may affect on the country’s culture. But Indian gender that men have dominance over women has not been changed. Indian men like action movies which has strong men. Why can’t cultural globalization change one’s country gender?  And what can change it?

The formation of gender

First of all, it is gender, the cultural and social roles of men and women. It’s not true that we have had one idea of gender from the old days. Gender is constructed by history, culture and society. Then, gender doesn’t make social facts. Conversely, social facts do make one idea of gender. That is to say, for example, the fact that women get one job connects with an idea that the job is only for women and the job is good for women.

Gender by districts

Gender has regional differences because it is constructed by regional culture and history. I will introduce about it.

The textile industry in Japan; the textile industry in Japan has an image it is job for women. In 1900s, a domestic cottage industry was women’s job. Japanese husband calls his wife “kanai 家内”.  The textile industry was one of the domestic cottage industry, so the image has remained until now.

The textile industry in Germany; the textile industry in Germany has an image it is job for men. In1800s flourished in Keln. Then Germany men organized “zunft”. And they were proud of their jobs and they had big power. History has made an image like this.

Gender and cultural globalization

I think cultural globalization can’t transform regional gender easily, like it can’t change history and culture easily. Then, what can change regional gender for women’s active participation in society? I think “education” can change it. I believe education and knowledge can make independent women. It would be effective that establishing environment girls can study freely without pressure and dominance by men. I think it is a good way to establish girls’ schools that raise independent women who can do any task without depending on men in the world.

The Key to Reducing Inequalities in the World

by Kensuke Kubo

We studied inequality around the world in class, and discussed it from various perspectives. In the discussion, the gap of income was discussed eagerly and our opinion was totally divided. For example, LeBron James, famous pro basketball player, can make money ¥5,340,000,000 in a year, but the average of teacher’s in come is ¥4,000,000 in a year. Is it fair that famous basketball player can earn 1335 times of money comparing the person who works as a teacher? The capacity of earning money is one of the results of people’s efforts in their life. Of course it cannot be said in all of cases, just a part of their efforts. But high income can be evidence of the size of their volume of recognition from other person.

As I supposed an example of sports player and teachers at first, there are lots of inequalities in the world. Some people said that “it is not fair condition because teacher is necessary to study various things, but sports player does not.” I think it is not a problem because it is one of the results of their efforts, and perhaps most of people recognize that teacher is an important job. The most important things to consider the problem are to provide same opportunity for the people in all over the world. Although the job is a result of their efforts, it cannot be fair condition if all people cannot have access to the opportunity to grant their wishes. I think that to provide the same opportunity is more important than reduce the income gap. The word “inequality” means not a part of income, but a different number of opportunities to access.

When we look around the world, the opportunity is totally different between rich countries and poor countries, and even in the rich country, there are some different to access the opportunity. The main fact comes from their educational background. Taking education is one of the ways to access their dream, but there are still lots of people who do not afford taking education even they have enough ability. My suggestion to improve their access is that government or international society should give all of education for free if people have enough ability to take them. I think that it can be one of the steps to open their possibility to the society.

Environmental Justice

by Chinatsu Kitamura

“Environmental justice” combines environmental protection with social justice. And “environmental justice movement” was movement which took place in the United States in the 1980s as criticism to “environmental racial discrimination.” It criticized the worst situation which thrust on poor people to concentrate Hazardous-wastes processing plants. In the United States, the environmental justice office was established in U.S. Commonwealth Environment Protection Agency in response to the rise of environmental justice movement of society in 1992. Then, in the United States, the contents of the damage of the minority who were weak groups in the world become clear with a rise of environmental justice movement. Mark Dowie said that the main damage of environmental racial discrimination is following.

First, the lead concentration in an African-American baby’s blood is so high. It is caused by a factory, a leaded gas which was delayed regulation, paint, and so on. Second, according to research of Environmental Protection Agency, the federal government, a hazardous-wastes disposal site is located in the communities of an African and a Hispanic people who are low income group in many cases. Third, the influence of a uranium mine and radioactive waste is concentrated on the place which former inhabitants live. For example, the number of cancer cases of his teens of the Navajo nation is 17 times the national average. Fourth, there are many pesticide poisoning persons among Hispanic agrarian laborers. Fifth, there are asthmatic who live in the big city to cause by the air pollution among the black people. And mortality rate is 5 times the white people.

Like this, although the minority has received environmental racial discrimination, the nuclear development and nuclear power generation as most serious damage are the points which cannot be overlooked for us who live in Japan.  For example, in the accident of the nuclear power plant, the number of the worker who was exposed to radiation concentrated on the subcontract workers to compare with the employee of an electric power company. This subcontract worker’s sources of supply are a cheap laborer and the minority. Furthermore, also in a nuclear test, when the wind in the nuclear test place in Nevada blew in the direction of big cities, such as Los Angeles and Las Vegas, an experiment was suspended. However, it was carried out when blowing toward the area of a minority like Nevada or Utah.

As for this, the same sight is seen also in a nuclear power plant of Japan. For example, the Tokyo Electric Power did not have a nuclear power plant in the own territory, but it located the nuclear power plant in the land of the next company and supported mass consumption of the metropolitan area. Thus, Fukushima suffered great damage in the earthquake on March 11. The majority desires a better life and forces a big burden on a minority. However, the majority have to solve the problem by yourself. Therefore, I think it is important to become a minority’s position and to just think.

Why do CEOs earn such high salaries?

by Tomotaka Isono

CEO or star players in the sporting world earn higher salaries. For example, according to my professor’s presentation, LeBron James who plays in Miami Heat made  about $53,000,000 in one year! And Apple CEO Tim Cook made $375,000,000 in 2011. In other hands, office workers in Japan made about 412 million yen ($51,500) in 1 year. Why are there the differences between CEO and office workers? Is it fair or unfair? Why on earth do they make such higher salaries? I’m writing about this question now.

When we work, we get salary. Then, how is the salary decided? I think there are 4 factors.

First, the business contents are. For example, I work a part-time job, I earn $9.20 per hour. Making papers by using PC in 1 hour deserve earning 9.2 $. But in the business contents, I and CEO are not different very much? CEO also sometimes make papers by PC. So what are the differences between CEO and I? CEO, Tim Cook made about $43,150 per hour.

Second, I think one’s nature is including salary calculation. Steve Jobs has creative power that leave somebody speechless and attractive presentation skill.  Ichiro has good batting eyes and fast running ability. These abilities are not able to be imitated by any other people. Therefore they earn high salaries.

Third, these natures and abilities are based on their efforts. Jobs prepared presentation before 1 or 2 months, and Ichiro come to stadium the earliest in the team and started training.

Finally, effort is very important, but most important factor is good result. Ichiro recorded 200 hits in 10 seasons in a row. And player who produced good results got much salary.

These 4 factors; business content, nature, effort and result decide salaries. So CEO got higher salary than I. CEO’s job is not easy, but very difficult. CEO is the occupation that is to do the job nobody would like to do. It is to determine a course in the difficult situation. His determination make his employee lose their job, and effect bad result to the world.  CEO have to do job in the severe pressure. So CEO get higher salary than employee. I think instead of such high salary, CEO has huge responsibility for his employee, his country and the world.

Japanese Animation and Comics as Soft Power

by Hana Iwaki

These days, Japanese pop culture like anime and manga is very popular in the world.  It has effect to the people who watch or read it.  Most of them are interested in Japanese culture in no small way.  This is called soft power.  Nye defined soft power as “the ability to get what you want through attraction rather than through coercion.” He also noted that soft power “could be developed through relations with allies, economic assistance, and cultural exchanges.” (UCLA, 2005)  That is to say, the ability to attract and co-opt rather than coerce and rather than using force or money as a means of persuasion. On the contrary, hard power is means using militarily power or economic power to influence other countries.

Japanese anime is broadcasted over a hundred countries and amount sold of manga is over ten billion. Then why Japanese pop culture is popular in the world? It is often said that the quality of manga and anime is very high.  The scale of it is very huge and it’s like a movie. And the category is wide and all generation people can read or watch it. Serif of Japanese animation has special meanings. It sometimes encourages, heal and entertain people. There are many Japanese comic which theme school life. So young people feel it familiar to them. In many countries, animation is to be for children. However, Japanese animation is not only popular among young but also adult. So this is one of the reasons.

This popular, mainly among young, leads them to interest in Japan. Many people who study Japanese increased and some people think Japan is cool. The Japanese government exports Japanese culture and industry as “Cool Japan”. Ministry of Economy leads this, and they hold Japan expo over the world. It has succeeded.

However, the amount sold of comic is still lower than each country’s original comics. And also the amount sold of animation is very low.  The advertisement is not effective.  I think this is the reason. I often see my facebook friends who wrote Japanese animation character, wear Japanese traditional cloth “yukata” and dressing in costume. This is the influence of globalization. I want people all over the world to watch and read Japanese animation and comic because it is very interesting.

Filipinos and the Color Complex: Ideal Asian Beauty

by Maiko Takada

I would like to discuss about Asian beauty by answering two questions from the discussion in class.

First, “why do Japanese cosmetic commercials use only Japanese models to represent?” According to the text book, it is common to use mixed-race models in cosmetic advertising all over Asia because such models are seen to have global appeal and inspire sales. However, why this idea does not fit in Japanese case? In my opinion, it’s because models in the cosmetic advertisement represent majority of women in the country. To increase the sales, advertisers show that how the products are effective for majority of consumers. In most of the case, models become more beautiful by using products in advertisement. And consumers who saw the advertisement would buy products because they link themselves to models and believe that they also become beautiful just like models by using products. Therefore, models need to have similar feature with consumers such as hair color, eye color, or skin color. If models have totally different feature from consumers, consumers pay attention to model’s feature rather than effect of products. For instance, if American models had big eyes in cosmetic advertisement, Japanese consumers do not think that model’s eyes became bigger because of products. Instead, consumers believe that model’s eyes are big by nature because they are American. Since there are many mixed-race people in multi-racial countries in Asia such as Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore, mixed-race models are more acceptable than pure-race models for consumers in such countries. On the other hand, Japanese cosmetic commercials tend to use Japanese models because “pure-Japanese” are majority in Japan.

Second, “since definition of beauty has changed through out the centuries, do you think that the sense of beauty will stay light or shift to tanned?” By looking back the trend of skin color, it seems that light skin and tanned skin had been the vogue by turns. In the case of Japan, light skin had been seen as beauty in 平安 period. Since there was no electronic system in that period, women put white powder on their skin to emphasize their face in the dark. In contrast, many young people went to beach or tanning salon to get tanned because tanned skin had been seen as “cool” or “fashion” in 1980’s. However, people have noticed that sun rays cause skin cancer and started to aim being 美白 from 1990s. I personally do not want to be lighter than my natural skin color but I do care about getting damage of sun rays. Therefore, I put sunscreen on my skin every day. It seems that light skin is the main stream of definition of beautiful skin color in recent years. In the case of skin lighteners in South Africa that we learned couple weeks ago or Japanese people who get tanned to be cool has similar tendency. That is, lack of knowledge about physical effect. People aimed to get ideal skin color but did not concern about toxic chemical in skin lighting or risk of skin cancer. Since many people know that changing skin color by force is unhealthy now, I think definition of beauty would be “staying natural skin color to keep healthy skin condition”. Fading acne or freckles by using cosmetics is acceptable to stay healthy skin but I do not think people would try to change their skin color by destroying their epidermis anymore.
